FROM THE EDITOR

Photo of John Mc FarlaneYou will have realised “The SURVIVOR” comes with an extra book this time, the companion to “POLIO & US” it celebrates the talents of PPSG members and was sponsored, in the main, as is this edition of the magazine by“PEOPLE IN NEED”– but more of this later.

Winter approaches, and if the pundits are right it will be a harsh one, not just in climatic terms but also financial. By the time this reaches you the Minister of Finance will either be just about to, or will have had his say, about the finances and budgets for 2010.We all know that things are dire but just hope that the most vulnerable in society are not to be taken as an easy target. Energy prices will rise, part of the pact between the Green Party and Fianna Fail is a carbon tax – revenue neutral to the Government but not to those who have to use a car as public transport is either nor existent or non accessible.

Remember to get your flu injections this year, even more important with “swine flu” on the increase. Polio Survivors are considered in the at risk category as most of us suffer from some form or respiratory problem, and we have neurological problems. Cost of the “swine flu” injection is not a barrier to anyone as everybody in the State is entitled to it FREE OF CHARGE, depending on your individual circumstances you may have to pay for your seasonal flu “jab”.

The season of good will and peace to all is nearly upon us, and another year has flown past. The Group has responded to the changes brought about by external forces and will continue to fight for all polio Survivors without fear or favour. This is your Group, and responds to your needs but sometimes it needs a little help from you as well. So consider the appeal for help on “The Survivor” and the web site printed elsewhere in this edition.

At this festive season may I wish you all the best and whatever your faith or creed “May your God go with you”.

MISSION STATEMENT
Our Mission is to create awareness and to provide information regarding the late effects of polio among Polio Survivors, statutory agencies and the wider medical profession, and to ensure that the needs of Polio Survivors relating to their condition are met to enable them to live with dignity

A message to all from the chairman, Hugh Hamilton

Photo of Hugh HamiltonDear Members,
As this is my last year as chairman, I decided to visit as many social groups throughout the country as I could, and so far I have visited thirteen and hope to do three more before Christmas. I have been greatly encouraged by these meetings, and know that the PPSG has a very solid base throughout Ireland. This is a great credit, not only to the people who started the Groups, but especially to you, the members, who after all are the heart and soul of the PPSG-- and that is what it is all about.

I have found these meetings, where I met a lot of you, to be most rewarding for an exchange of views, and I would encourage anymembers who have not attended social support meetings in the past, to try them, as they are most enjoyable and very relaxed and informal apart from being informative and interesting.

You all should have received the new assessment of need (questionnaire) by now and, if you have not already done so, I beg of you to fill it in and return it to the office as it is extremely important to us that as many members as possible do this even if they do not expect to need any assistance in the near future.

Finally I wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Peaceful New Year. Hugh Hamilton

With best wishes
Hugh Hamilton

CONFERENCE & AGM 2010

The Annual Conference and AGM will be held over the 7 & 8 May 2010 at the Strand Hotel, Limerick. GET IT IN YOUR DIAIRIES NOW. Full details will be posted on the web site and posted to all members in January 2010

THANK YOU JOAN BRADLEY

Photo of Joan BradleyAfter the 2009 AGM some Chair persons of Committees felt it was time to stand down, one of those was Joan. Here a fellow PPSG Member puts on paper what we all feel.

“Hello! Yes, this is Joan Bradley….”

Many are the people with disabilities, especially those with the Post Polio Syndrome, who have taken up the phone, knowing that they will receive a sympathetic hearing, and rung her number.

Joan, founder member of the PPS Group, is a native of Co. Laois. Having contracted polio when four years old, she was a patient of both the Children’s Hospital in Dublin’s Harcourt Street, and in Dr. Stevens’ Hospital.Through her perseverance and determination to improve her own physical wellbeing, she underwent a successful early life with the encouragement of her mother and her family; she started school at nine.

She qualified as a radiographer, but after some years, due to the strain following the onset of the late effects of polio, she changed her profession to become a receptionist and telephonist. However, like so many of those she has helped, she continued to suffer an increasing loss of physical ability and took early retirement. But Joan never gives up. She is continuing to devote her life to voluntarily helping others through our organisation, especially through the Allocations Committee.

Chair of this committee since its inception, and a member of the Board of Directors and Trustees; nobody has been more diligent. Joan also represents the Group at national disability fora and is a Disability Federation of Ireland representative for the PPSG.

Joan’s life doesn’t stop at the aforementioned work to which she is dedicated; Oh no! She is an accomplished poet and dedicates her grá for the medium towards encompassing the trials and the alleviance of pain by touchingly bringing her understanding of the frailty of the disabled to her readers. Two particularly evocative pieces are “Uphill”, influenced perhaps by Maurice O’Sullivan’s autobiographical “Twenty Years Agrowing”, and “A Little Bit of Heaven”, a spiritual inspiration elucidating her religious sentiments towards her Creator and her faith. Of course, she shared many others in her recently published book which she kindly distributed at our 2009 Conference. Joan also studies nature and enjoys reading and swimming.

Very many of us are indebted to Joan for her care, her consideration, her perseverance and her confidentiality. Long may she continue to play an active role in our group, especially by indicating her personal interest in each of us.We also appreciate her presence as she welcomes us to each event, albeit from her wheelchair.

Joan, thank you for so much, and may we continue to share ourselves with you, and you with us After the 2009AGMsome Chair persons of Committees felt it was time to stand down, one of those was Joan. Here a fellow PPSG Member puts on paper what we all feel. “Hello! NURSING HOME SUPPORT SCHEME

In the past the state subvention contributions towards the cost of long-term nursing home care has been compared to taking
your chances on the European Lottery.Applicants with similar, and in some cases identical, finances have received differing
and different levels of subsidy. It also seemed to depend on whether the person needing the care was in a private or HSE
run establishment.

Mary Harney,TD, Minister for Health and Children, claims the situation will improve from October 27, when her new
scheme, called “Fair Deal”, comes into force, claiming that it will treat all nursing home residents equally. The Minister
claims it will make care accessible, affordable and anxiety-free. With costs running at €700-€1,000 a week in private nursing homes, that it quite a claim!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Under Fair Deal, nursing home residents will pay 80% of their disposable incomes, plus 5% every year of the value of assets worth more then €36,000, to pay for their care. The Health Service Executive (HSE) will make a state support payment to cover the balance. Couples — married or cohabiting, straight or gay — will be assessed on the value of their joint assets worth more then €72,000.

It means those with money will have to dig deep into their savings to pay for their care. For example, if you have a pension of €400 a week and assets of €250,000, you will be liable to meet the first €526 a week out of your pocket - €126 more then your pension. In essence your assets, savings or otherwise are going to decrease by €6,550 a year to cover the shortfall, and that is before making any allowance for other living expenses. In the words of Eamon Timmins, the head of advocacy at Age Action, “These other expenses are likely to be considerable because Fair Deal doesn’t cover basic needs such as physiotherapy, chiropody or specialised wheelchairs.”

WHAT ABOUT MY HOME?
The scheme, it is maintained is designed in a such way that those going into care or their spouse are not forced to sell or
mortgage their homes to pay for care. However, the rules state your home is an asset, so that 5% of its value must be added to
the contribution that nursing home residents make from their own pockets each year.

But home values are taken into consideration for three years only, so that you will never pay more than 15% of its value in your contribution, no matter how long you stay in a nursing home. A similar concession has been made for family farms and businesses, to reduce the risk of forced sales.

HOW CAN I PAY MORE FOR CARE THAN I HAVE?On the face of it, it does not make sense, howcan somebody pay more than they have coming in? Well the answer lies in the fact that you can ask the HSE to bridge the shortfall by increasing its contribution through a nursing home loan, rather like one you used to get from the banks. Like a bank loan it will have to repaid, with interest, from your estate after your death. In the event that your spouse or partner are unable to repay it when you die, they can ask that the repayment be deferred until their demise, whether the extra period attracts further interest is not clear at present.

SHOULD I GET RID OF MY ASSETS NOW?Probably too late for many as the rules allow the HSE to take into consideration anything earned or given to others within five years of going into a nursing home. As Eamonn Timmins says “This is a harsh rule, but the state has to protect its interests to stop people manipulating their finances before going into a home”. In essence this area is being looked at in the same way as tax evasion, whereby the state coffers may be defrauded. “Fair Deal” depends on when you enter a nursing home, as HSE will look at the value of assets at that time. House prices may have crashed, bank shares collapsed but both will recover. What this means to HSE contributions to support for those in need of care will only be seen after the event. Mary Harney says it is intended to take stresses and strains away from those in need of care and their carers.

Is “Fair Deal” going to work – only time will tell.

YOUR “SURVIVOR” NEEDS YOU!

picture of a light bulbAs has been seen over the past few years “The SURVIVOR” has grown from a small newsletter into an ever increasingly sophisticated professional magazine. Its purpose, not only to inform but also allow those in the Post Polio Support Group to exchange ideas and experiences - for at its core is YOU, the member.

Alongside “The SURVIVOR” in the more recent past has grown the PPSG’s web site (www.ppsg.ie) and this has an international readership not just in English speaking countries but all over the world wherever there are polio Survivors.

It is imperative that we keep both publications relevant to the needs and experiences of all Survivors, but especially here in Ireland. Therefore, theTrustees and Directors of PPSG have decided an editorial board is needed to help guide the development of both publications.

So we need YOU. If you are interested in helping with guiding, developing ideas for either “The SURVIVOR” or the web site, or both, please get in contact with the office now.The task will neither be strenuous nor taxing, indeed it could well be fun for its your ideas that are needed – YOUR EUREKA MOMENT!

FUND RAISING – A THOUGHT

If you are celebrating an anniversary or other special occasion people are often at a loss for what to buy you – after all most of us have reached an age where we have most if not all we need for the house and ourselves. So why not suggest to family and friends if they are stuck for that “special something” a donation to the PPSG would never go amiss. All will be acknowledged and will be a benefit to a polio Survivor somewhere. You never know it might even be you!

DID YOU KNOW – ABOUT LITTLE CHRISTMAS

That 2008 was a second longer than 2009 will be, and that it all goes back to Church history?

This space ship of ours called Earth is slowing ever so slowly, to the extent that Universal Time will “drift” east from Greenwich until the introduction of a leap hour in about 600 years.

Tinkering with time, let alone the calendar, is nothing new, and some 300 years ago it lead to the “loss” of 11 days. In 325 AD the Council of Nicae, under the guidance of the Pope, adopted the Julian Calendar.Trouble was its calculations were out by 11 minutes a year. By the time of the 16th century, this amounted to 10 days. This began to worry his Holiness Pope Gregory XIII as Easter was getting out of line with Church and Biblical doctrine. Therefore, at theVatican’s instigation Catholic Europe adopted the corrected Gregorian calendar in 1582, the rest of Western Europe followed in 1700 – except for Sweden and Britain – and that meant Ireland as well.

Another thing to complicate matters was that Scotland, until the Act of Union in 1707, was still a separate country in a legal sense, so in 1600 they adopted January 1 as the start of the New Year. Because England was still on the old calendar, they persisted in insisting the New Year started on March 25. Now things were really getting complicated because the old Julian calendar used in England,Wales and Ireland was 11 days different to the new Gregorian calendar. Put it another way when it was January 9, 1709 in London, it was January 19 in Edinburgh and January 30 just about everywhere else.

England,Wales and Ireland finally caught up in 1752, but as late as the 1880s some labourers in Somerset and parts of Ireland were still celebrating Christmas Day on January 6th. So now you know why “little Christmas” still has significance and why the Orthodox Eastern and Russian Churches although adopting the Gregorian Calendar celebrate Christmas on January 6th every year.

Hugh Hamilton, our Chairman, came to visit us at our September meeting and tell us about the PPSG organisation as a whole and asked for suggestions in relation to our needs, improvements etc. Hugh emphasised that money is scarce this year and that fund raising is of the utmost importance. Embracing the theme of‘ask not what your organisation can do for you but what you can do for your organisation’, after Hugh’s departure the meeting turned to discussing undertaking a project to raise money for the Group sometime before next summer. This will be discussed more fully at later meetings. It was also decided that at our October meeting instead of involving the cost of engaging an external speaker,we would have an Activity Fun / Games Night and provide our own entertainment. The October Activities night was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The usual meeting format was abandoned and insteadmembers engaged in games and activities of their choice. Cards, draughts, chess, dominoes, scrabble and“Rummykub”were provided whilst tuition in crocheting baby caps (much needed by hospitals for new-born babies) and consultancy on colour and style was also available and proved very

popular amongst the ladies. Draughts and “Rummykub” (a game new to most of us) brought out the competitive spirit. In keeping with the theme of self sufficiency, delicious home-made cakes, muffins and biscuits were also provided by members. It was agreed that the time went all too quickly and that we should have an activities and games evening again soon.Thank you all for an evening of fun, challenges, chat, learning and home-made goodies. The November meeting of the Bray Group will be in the Glenview Hotel at 7.30pm on Tuesday 3rd. and the December meeting will be the celebratory Christmas dinner in the Glenview Hotel on Tuesday 1st. The Group from Castleblaney had their first post summer meeting in September and itwas verywell attended with the addition of a couple of new members.Wewere delighted towelcome our Chairman, Hugh Hamilton. Hugh spoke about the work of the PPSG and his plans for the future. He also asked for ideas and suggestions for the next conference and AGM which will be held in Limerick inMay and a lively discussion followed.

Although we had been off for the summer months the members had been active, most particularly on the fund raising front and on furthering the profile of the PPSG.We had our fund raising Church gate collections in May and there was a great drive at fund raising with selling of the tickets for the forthcoming raffle, which has been ongoing in the North East region. On the day of our meeting we had a speaker from the Carer’s Association who informed us of the veryworthwhile work of the group.Wewere very grateful to them for supplying such a wonderful representative. We were also very grateful for their pledge of support when they offered to donate the proceeds of their yearly fundraising to us in 2010. It is hoped that we will have a plan of action for most meetings in the coming months and our next meeting is 3rd November and our Christmas lunch on 8th December. Will be sure to let you all knowhow we are getting on and wish all the other support groups the best of luck in the coming year.

On Saturday 5th Sept the Cork Branch of the PPSG held their Annual Chill- Out Day. It was held once again at the Dominican Retreat Centre. The meeting waswell attended.Wewere blessed with wonderful weather.

After registration and tea or coffee the day commenced at 10.30. Evelyn, Area Convenor for Cork, welcomed everybody including our guests Hugh Hamilton, Chairperson from head office Dublin, and Anne Shanahan, Regional Support Officer.

Cork Chill-Out Day

A new member Mary-Teresa Nolan originally from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon now living in Cork was welcomed into the fold.

Evelyn then introduced the speaker TrishTivy, fromthe Citizens Information Bureau.Trish advised the group mainly on Social Welfare and Health Board entitlements, housing grants and making wills.Trish took questions from the floor andwas available for one to one after her presentation. She was very informative and gave out leaflets and is available at her office for queries and consultations. Homestead was represented by Kim Lombard. We were informed of their services which included home help, shopping and tax refunds on nursing fees.

There was a break for a lovely lunch and we chatted among ourselves. As a result of the chat two members Sheila and Catherine discovered they both had the same problem regarding footwear. Each had to buy 2 pairs of shoes at a time as their feet were two different sizes. So in the future they may only have to buy 1 pair each (i.e. size 6 & 7) and swap with other. They shared their idea with the group which earned lots of laughter and seen as a brilliant idea.

After lunch we were all refreshed: Hugh Hamilton, Chairman, presented an outline of the work in progress of the PPSG and the need for Funding, as the monies from the HSE, private donations and sponsorship were greatly reduced due to the recession. He was delighted with turnout at our meeting and wished the group continued success.

Anne Shanahan and Terry Fairtlough spoke of their travels around to the different groups that Anne had set up giving them advice and support especially when the groups were only in the new beginnings.

Themeetingendedonalightnotewhen the group exchanged tips on the use of mobile phones Evelyn then thanked the Staff for the lovely food and all the help they gave. She thanked all those who assisted her with meeting.

We adjourned for more food lovely Tea and Scones.

Masswas celebrated. The lovelymusic was supplied by Sheila O’Sullivan and the readings by Terry and Vincent.

More food:AlovelyTeawas served and more chat. Goodbyes were exchanged and Please God we’ll meet up next year for another pleasant day.

Garage Sale

On September 12/13 something quite different took place for the group in Cork. One of the members took on a great task of having a GARAGE SALE to raise funds for the group. What an undertaking this was, a lot of hard work before hand getting items to sell, then pricing items to be sold and arranging items on shelves. On the two days meeting up with people and being on hand from 12noon to 6pm was no joke. The two days were so hot it was hard to believe itwas September but this made the days so outstanding for anyone that took the time to go and support Sunny Osburn. It was great fun sitting outside in the sunshine drinking orange, eating the lovely cakes that were given and meeting up with Sunny’s wonderful neighbours, friends and members of PPSG who came over the two days. Well-done Sunny for all the hard work you put into making a great success of the first ever Garage Sale that took place for PPSG and raised almost €900.00.Guess what, she is still selling from the Garage and cannot wait for the next big sale for Easter in 2010.

Evelyn Wainwright

Photo of Sunny OsburnI would like to thank my neighbours and my PPSG friends for their assistance in making my garage sale a success. I want to give a very special thanks to Evelyn and her daughter Michelle who came a few days prior to the sale and priced all the items. Evelyn and her husband Terry were by my side both days of the sale from start to finish. My thanks also to Sheila O’Sullivan for the posters she put on the roads to guide the people to my house

Cork Women’s mini Marathon

Whatever the weather, it really seems to come good here in Cork for the Evening Echo Women’s mini Marathon. For the past five years we have enjoyed glorious conditions for our great event, which is one of our main fundraisers.

The preparation on theweeks leading up to the “Big Day” were very exciting. My daughter Margaret and her three girls Michelle 9, Jennifer 7 and Sinead 5, decided it would be more fun to push me on the wheelchair, rather than I going on my scooter. Of course it was very important for each one to wear the PPSG T-Shirt, and rope in Grandad Pat for a helping hand along the way. On Sunday morning Cork was a hive of activity with lots of women and men dressed as lovely girls attired in beautiful outfits and some astonishing hairdo’s arriving early. This added to the excitement immensely.

Everybody appeared in happy, jovial mood and numbers participating seemed well up on previous years, each one in aid of their own particular charity. As we assembled at the starting point we were entertained with lively music, adding to the bright atmosphere. We had great pleasure in personallymeeting the dignitaries e.g. Bishop of Cork Rev. John Buckley and Lord Mayor Cllr. Dara Murphy.

Photo of runners and walkers from Cork mini Marathon

PPSG were very well represented, each in their own category e.g. Scooters, Wheelchairs and‘pushers’, Runners and Walkers. The splash of red colour looked really well.

The route of the Marathon is full of variety, firstly the tree lined roadway, displaying beautiful autumn shades and falling leaves. It revived memories of old school days, as the younger folk rustled along the fallen leaves. Then we proceeded along by the River Lee in its splendor with a few canoes here and there adding to the scenery. Eventually we turned for the home straight, helped along by encouraging cheers from the groups on the pathways. Everyone was happy to arrive back at the finish on Kennedy Park and receive their medal. First stop was the local shop for ‘Nanas’ treat of ice cream for everyone, “eaten while sitting on the wall outside”. Then across the Bridge to Jurys Inn for lovely refreshments provided by PPSG while we all unwound before returning home, tired but happy after a wonderful day.

Peg Brennan

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that took part in the Mimi Marathon and helped in any way to raise funds for the group.Your help is very much appreciated. If you still have Marathon Cards and money please send them in so we will know how the fundraising for this event is after raising.

Civil Defence was on duty to give us safe passage through the crowds.A very sincere thank you to John and Maurice for all their help that was above and beyond the call of duty.Well done to the Hotel and thank you to all the staff for your welcome.

Jury’s Inn once again did us proud on the day with the way they were so attentive to all that came back to the hotel.Thank you to all the staff for your welcome.

Now that another year is over for fundraising please keep up the great work in the coming year taking part and helping to raise funds for the Marathon remember doing a little helps a lot.

Two members who had been childhood friends met again for the first time. Some people had to travel quite a distance and we are grateful to you for making such an effort to come.

We were not so lucky with our meeting in DonegalTown on 6th October – it was a case of “empty chairs andempty tables” so Donal and Amy, Anne andTerry adjourned to the bar and joined in the sing-along!

Our Christmas party will be held in the Villa Rose Hotel, Ballybofey, on Saturday 12th December and we are looking forward to welcoming old and new friends.

We had our first meeting on 30th of September after the summer break. This meeting was well attended and we caught up with a lot of what was going on over the summer, and any difficulties incurred.

Photo. Georgine and Eddie enjoying a break in the meetingBefore the summer breakwe organised two outings, one to Ardgillan Castle in Co. Meath. This was a great day, and lucky enough the weather stayed dry, so we got a great tour around the castle and gardens, especially the rose garden. If any other group wants to organise a day it is well worth a visit. We also organised a weekend break away to the Athlone Hudson Bay Hotel for 3 nights in September, (we got a good deal) thiswas great fun, we enjoyed the hospitality so muchwe are thinking of going overnight for our Christmas party, sowe are saving up now!

Our aims and plans for the group in 2010 are going to be busy especially in the arts and creativity area. A lot of our members have expressed an interest in the speech and drama area and we are hoping to set up a drama group (funds allowing) in November or early 2010. The art squad which meets on Mondays is very popular and continues to give enjoyment and interest to our members as well as friendship and support.

We also are thinking of having one or two monthly meetings in the evening to allowmembers who are working during the day to attend our meeting; we hope to organise that very soon.We are hoping also to get friends and family more involved in the group, maybe attend the odd meeting to get an idea of what we are about.

In conclusion, we are proud to say we are holding up together as a group because we are all committed to making it work for all of us and that’s what it’s all about.SUPPORT FRIENDSHIPAND COMMITMENT.

If you want any more information about our Branch please do not hesitate to contact Bridget at 086 3464290 or Eddie 087 2800010 we would be happy to help.

It uses movement and self-awareness to improve our ability to move with freedom and ease in everyday life.We all, including Hugh, had great fun as Mary put us through our paces –wewere quite surprised to see that most of us could still stand and touch our toes!

At the September gathering we welcomed our Chairman Hugh Hamilton to Limerick. He talked about thework of the PPSG, the importance of fundraising and his plans for the future of the PPSG.

Following Hugh’s talk we were delighted to have Dr. Gerard Dore, Psychotherapist, who gave a most interesting and informative talk. Gerard is the son of Phil Dore, who has been an active and committed member of this group from the beginning. Gerard’s talk led to some interesting questions being raised and the discussion continued into the “tea time”!

Photo of the Limerick group, enjoyng scones !!In Octoberwe had a great opportunity to learn more about boots, shoes and callipers which are regularly raised as matters of concern for the polio survivor. Olivia, from Tru-Life in Cork, demonstrated the latest shoes and boots, callipers, seats for wheelchairs, shower seats and other items designed to help with daily living. It was a very enjoyable and informative evening. On 9th November Mr. Senthil Camar from First Steps Rehab. Centre in Patrickswell is coming to talk to us about the Centre and the facilities and services already being availed of by some of our members.

The Limerick mini marathon was a great day out enjoyed by participants and friends alike. We had 17 PPSG participants who came from Limerick city and county, Co. Clare, and Co Tipperary. We had two wheelchair participants, Mary Heffernan from Garrykennedy and her friend Sylkie. Marywas 1st of thewheelchair users past the post helped by her friend from the Milford Care Centre. Congratulations Mary and will done for the great write up in the Nenagh Guardian! A great cheer went up for Helen Jordan who walked the full 7km using her father’s tripod walker.Well done Helen!

Some of our members were approached by interested people to enquire about the PPSG as they had never heard of it and expressed great interest.

Report fromWest Region Mayo/Galway Summer Outing August 15th.

Photo of Bridie Mc Mahon and Marie GallagherThe sun shone brightly on Saturday August 15th for the Galway/Mayo Group as we explored the Museum of Country Life and Turlough House, near Castlebar in Co. Mayo. The day was organised by Barbara McDonagh & Bridie McMahon. Admission was free. Members of the group reminisced of times past in rural Ireland customs, traditions, history and heritage as we read with interest details of implements used in farming and of life generally in rural Ireland up to the 60’s. It gave us all a glimpse once again of our rich heritage and culture and helped foster a greater appreciation of it. We all enjoyed the day.We had a lovely lunch in the Museum restaurant. We all acknowledged the support given by the Post Polio Support Group.

Hugh Hamilton, Chairperson of PPSG and Paula Lahiff joined us for the day. Bridie briefed the group on the forthcoming national raffle. Hugh gave us an update on plan 2010 and informed us of the major cutbacks facing organisations such as ours. Hugh was delighted to meet the group and enjoyed his visit to the Museum and the West.

The group chatted for a while after lunch and exchanged information and updates on health issues and supports. Barbara McDonagh made a fine choice for a day out for the group.Well done Barbara!! The West is truly awake!!!

The Laois/Offaly PPSG held a special gathering of sixteen members enjoying a meal and concert at theTullamore Court Hotel in July. What made it special was the hotel’s “package” providing dinner, concert and bed and breakfast. With the support of OPSG HQ, the group enjoyed the entertainment given by ColmWilkinson and his band, playing to a full house.

The concert ran to several “encores”, a good sing-along opportunity and all agreed thatWilkinson was wonderful. There was plenty of time for the usual exchange of views, supposedly some social gossip and a few relaxing drinks.

THEY DID WHAT THEY COULD

by Joan Bradley.

‘ThankYou!’ to the ferry men of Baltimore for a very enjoyable afternoon on Cape Clear Island. While on holiday, my cousin and I decided to take the trip. It was a beautiful day, so rare this year. The ferry men, rather foolish I think, assured us that a wheelchairwould be no problem; not even a heavy one! After the best fish and chips I have ever tasted, we set off for the quayside. I got out of my wheel chair, to lighten the load, and tookmy first step down to the boat; then I stopped! Descending the steps wouldn’t be too bad; what about getting up them again? ‘Look before you leap’ I’ve been told.

“Oh no, we’ll help” I was assured.

It was a rough crossing yet enjoyable, but my mind was in a whirl; once at the island, should I stay on the boat and go back to Baltimore, only disembarking once.

“Would you mind being carried?” they asked; I agreed to it.

Before I could wink three men had picked me up and were stepping off. The problem was they forgot the great cooperation essential for such an operation. They nearly dropped me, butmuch shouting by the ferry men savedme. Meanwhile a crowd, watching from the quayside, made complimentary comments. While enjoying the peace and beauty of Cape Clear I worked out a plan. With a little help, I would be able to walk up the steps backwards. It worked. But, hats off to the ferry men of Baltimore - not sure if I would go again!

This is the photo of Brian Crummy with Sean Lemass on that historic day.BRIAN CRUMMY MEETS SEAN LEMASS

In 1959 Sean Lemass became Taoiseach and De Valera headed for the Park for the next fourteen years. On that day Brian Crummy was doing Flag Days on behalf of the Central Remedial Clinic. He had given three days of his holidays in appreciation of the work that the Clinic were doing to get polio Survivors back on their feet again. Lady Goulding was so impressed that she got the Irish Press to cover Brian getting a half crown from the Taoiseach elect outside the Dáil on the day that he replaced Dev as leader of the country.
