Regional Representatives

When the position of Regional Representative was created, it was seen that the main function was in representing the Post Polio Support Group at local Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) meetings.  The Regional Representative could bring the concerns of the Group to local co ordination meetings, liaising with other area representatives and ultimately to the Health Board Regional Co-ordinating Committee.  He or she would, in addition, attend other local meetings, exhibitions and other activities in the area relevant to disability matters, thereby keeping the Group informed on local issues.

While this is still the role of the Regional Representative it is recognised that this is a time of great change within the health service structure.  The HSE organisation is still being built from the elements of the old Health Board structures, which, though formally abolished, are still somewhat in place in many areas.  Interaction for organisations such as ours is uneven and difficult and we hope that the time will come soon when we have clearer reporting lines.  The Regional Representatives are an important link to local initiative and activity and the Board and the office benefit greatly from local insight. The Board is extremely conscious of the need for constant review in this area.

Convenors

Our Group organises 'Social Support' meetings in various areas throughout the country. These informal meetings are run by local voluntary Convenors who are key to successful gatherings.  The main aim of these meetings is to provide our members with an opportunity to meet locally with other members and non-members for a social evening and a chat.  Feature speakers regularly attend presenting recreational and medical topics.  Outings and other activities are conducted at certain times of the year.  The contact details for the convenors are listed.

Leaders

A number of Polio Survivors have taken on a critical role in the management and development of telephone support.  These 'Leaders' undertake to contact other Polio Survivors for a chat on a regular basis.  Much information has been exchanged not just on management and treatment of Post Polio Syndrome but on hobbies, local interests, history and customs – a wealth of chat on many topics!
